Gene Watson Remembers Vern Gosdin: Wednesday 5 August 2020

Details
Published: 05 August 2020

On Wednesday 5 August 2020, Gene Watson remembered Vern Gosdin, on what would have been Vern's 86th birthday.

'Vern Gosdin was born on this day (5 August) in 1934 and sadly passed in 2009 (28 April).

He had three No.1s, but as often happens, one of his greatest never made it to the top of the charts.

Do you have a favorite by Vern?

This is one that should have been a No.1, 'Today My World Slipped Away'

The three No.1 singles, which Vern Gosdin achieved on the Billboard country music singles chart, were the following:

'I Can Tell By The Way You Dance (You're Gonna Love Me Tonight)' (written by Sandy Pinkard and Rob Strandlund) / this track was No.1 on the Billboard country music singles chart for one week in June / July 1984, and was included on Vern Gosdin's 'There Is A Season' (Compleat Records, 1984)

'Set 'Em Up, Joe', which was written by Hank Cochran (Friday 2 August 1935 - Thursday 15 July 2010), Vern Gosdin, Dean Dillon and Buddy Cannon / this track was No.1 on the Billboard country music singles chart for one week in July 1988, and was included on Vern Gosdin's 'Chiseled In Stone' (Columbia Records, 1987)

'I'm Still Crazy' (written by Vern Gosdin, Steve Gosdin and Buddy Cannon) / this track, which was included on Vern Gosdin's 'Alone' (Columbia Records, 1989), was No.1 on the Billboard country music singles chart for one week in September 1989

The Vern Gosdin track, which Gene Watson thought should have been a No.1 single on the Billboard country music singles chart, was 'Today My World Slipped Away' (Ami Records, 1983), which reached No.10 in 1982; the track was included on Vern Gosdin's 'Today My World Slipped Away' (AMI Records, 1982)

Gene Watson & Rhonda Vincent recorded Vern Gosdin's 'Til The End' (co-written with Cathy Gosdin) and included the track on 'Your Money & My Good Looks' (Upper Management Music, 2011).

On Thursday 12 October 2006, Vern Gosdin (Sunday 5 August 1934 - Tuesday 28 April 2009) graciously contributed a 'Peer's Quote about Gene Watson; you can read Vern's words about Gene Watson here.
