Monday 27

On Monday 22 September 2008, the Official Gene Watson Site announced that Gene Watson would receive a special Spotlight Exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville.

Country Music Hall of Fame: 'Gene Watson: Fourteen Carat Voice' Exhibit | Tuesday 7 October 2008 - Spring 2009

The 'Gene Watson: Fourteen Carat Voice' Exhibit was scheduled to open on Monday 20 October 2008 & would run through to June 2009.

'Gene Watson: Fourteen Carat Voice' would explore Watson's career as a soulful vocalist rooted in the classic country tradition, beginning with his steamy 1975 hit 'Love in the Hot Afternoon'.

In the exhibit, Watson's musical consistency would be juxtaposed with his wardrobe's evolution. Stage costumes on display would trace his 1970s clean-cut persona and attention-grabbing stage wear to a more relaxed look through the 1980s.

Watson scored a string of honky-tonk-styled hits throughout the late '70s and into the '80s that included 'Farewell party', 'Fourteen carat mind', 'Paper Rosie' and 'Memories to burn'. Since winning his battle with cancer in 2001, Watson continues to showcase his smooth, clear tenor voice on albums such as '
In a Perfect World' (Shanachie Records, 2007).

Artifacts in the exhibit would include:

Gene Watson Fan Site a 1970s green suit with rhinestones and musical-note embroidery, designed by Nudie's Rodeo Tailors

Gene Watson Fan Site a burgundy stage costume designed by Judy of Nashville with distinctive diamond shaped patterns embellished with rhinestones and ruby stones

There's never a dull moment on the road with Gene Watson!

Gene Watson & his Farewell Party Band were temporarily sidelined on their way to a performance in Gloversville, New York on Sunday 19 October 2008.

The bus driver was making a left turn on a narrow road just a few miles from the venue when the trailer hitch snagged the curb & held tight.

A supersized towing truck & several police cars rushed to the scene to disengage the teetering bus & eventually Gene & crew were on their way, making it to the concert on time.

Gene Watson throws a mechanic's eye over his tour bus in Gloversville, New York on Sunday 19 October 2008

When asked how bad the bus situation looked to the former mechanic, Gene Watson drily noted 'Well, let's just say we could have changed the tire with no jack'.

Gene Watson - a hero, even when facing danger!

Gene Watson Fan Site a suede cowboy hat with decorative pins that is featured on his '
Between This Time & the Next Time' album
