'A Taste of the Truth' will be officially released by Shanachie Records

Shawn Camp who
Gene met on Monday 15 June 2009 at the BMI offices in Nashville at a
special event to honour songwriter Hank Cochran.

Gene Watson recorded Shawn Camp's 'This side of the door' (co-written with Tim Mensy) & included the track on 'In a Perfect World' (Shanachie Records, 2007).

Wednesday 24
The Gene Watson Fan Site is proud to reproduce the following
BMI (Broadcast Music Inc)
Press Release, courtesy of Sarah Brosmer of
Lytle Management in Nashville:

Merle Haggard, Bobby Bare, Dean Dillon, Jamey Johnson, Lee Ann Womack, Gene Watson, Red Lane & Whitey Shafer took turns delivering acoustic versions of Hank Cochran classics, while guests including Elvis Costello, Cowboy Jack Clement, Jeannie Seely, Dallas Frazier, Scotty Emerick, Shawn Camp, Jim Lauderdale & others listened intently.
Willie Nelson couldn’t be at the reception, but he called & jovially addressed Cochran and the crowd via speaker phone.
The party was a well-kept secret from Cochran: he believed he was simply stopping by BMI to pick up numerous BMI Million-Air certificates, recognising the millions of performances generated by country music hits including 'Make the world go away' (Eddy Arnold), 'She’s got you' (Patsy Cline), 'I fall to pieces' (Patsy Cline), 'The chair' (George Strait), 'Ocean front property' (George Strait), 'Don’t you ever get tired of hurting me' (Gene Watson), 'Is it raining at your house' (Vern Gosdin), 'That's all that matters' (Mickey Gilley), 'Set 'em up Joe' (Vern Gosdin) & 'This ain't my first rodeo'.
However, an intimate gathering of friends & family awaited him as well and Merle Haggard led the small crowd in greeting - and pleasantly surprising - the beloved troubadour.

As stated, the BMI event in Nashville to honour Hank Cochran on Monday 15 June 2009 was attended by Gene Watson who, on this occasion, sang the Hank Cochran-penned 'A way to survive', which was the title track of 'A Way to Survive' album (Step One Records, 1997).
Gene was delighted to visit with Hank Cochran again; during his illustrious country music career, Gene Watson has recorded a number of Hank Cochran songs:

'I fell apart'
'Because You Believed in Me' (Capitol Records, 1976)

'He little thinged her out of my arms'
'Beautiful Country' (Capitol Records, 1977)

'Speak well of me'
'Sometimes I Get Lucky' (MCA Records, 1983)
Hank Cochran also recorded 'Speak well of me' & included the track on 'The Heart of Hank' (Monument Records, 1968)

'A way to survive'
'A Way to Survive' (Step One Records, 1997)

'Don't you ever get tired of hurting me'
'In a Perfect World' (Shanachie Records, 2007)
Interestingly, Hank Cochran has been quoted as saying that, despite the large number of songs that he has written, his favourite is 'Don't you ever get tired of hurting me' ('It's my favourite because it can still cut me up just like the day I wrote it').
'Don't you ever get tired of hurting me' was a No.1 country hit for Ronnie Milsap in March 1989, but it has also been recorded by Ray Price, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Jeannie Seely, Don Gibson, Jack Greene & Bobby Bare.
While attending the BMI event in Nashville to honour Hank Cochran on Monday 15 June 2009, Gene Watson was also glad to see all the older songwriters as well as meet many of the newer ones.

Gene was particularly pleased to meet Dallas Frazier because they had never met, even though Gene has recorded two of his songs ('This ain't no good day for leaving' & 'Fourteen carat mind'):

'This ain't no good day for leaving'
'Love in the Hot Afternoon' (Capitol Records, 1975)

'Fourteen carat mind'
'Old Loves Never Die' (MCA Records, 1981)

Gene also enjoyed meeting Shawn Camp who has written one of the songs on Gene's forthcoming album; the Gene Watson Fan Site can exclusively reveal that the album will be titled 'A Taste of the Truth' & it will be officially released by Shanachie Records on Tuesday 25 August 2009.
Gene also had a very nice talk with Jamey Johnson; Jamey & Gene met at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville in 2008 but had much longer time to talk on this occasion.
Exclusive photos taken during the course of the BMI event in Nashville to honour Hank Cochran on Monday 15 June 2009 will be posted soon within the respective galleries of the Gene Watson Fan Site & the Official Gene Watson Site.

The Gene Watson Fan Site is proud to announce the following news, courtesy
of Gene
Watson's Official Facebook:

'Hey Friends - What a great night last night in Branson, MO.
We played a sold out show with the legendary
Merle Haggard.
If you're reading this, I KNOW you're a Haggard fan too. We opened the
show, then Merle called me back to close his show with him on a gospel song.
I hope some of you were able to be there.
If not, we're playing another date with Merle on Friday 19 June 2009 at the
Alabama Music Hall of
Fame Grounds in Tuscumbia, AL so hopefully you can
get to that one.
Tomorrow, Saturday 13 June 2009, come out to the
Crosby Fair & Rodeo
in Crosby, TX; we'll be there and it should be a fun show. You can
call about tickets on (281) 328-2113.
The new album is nearly done. I'm proud of it and I know you're going
to love it. A few special friends dropped by to help with it which
we'll tell you about soon.
The album release date is set for Tuesday 25 August 2009. You'll be
able to buy it on my website,
www.genewatsonmusic.com,
and other locations. We'll have more information on that soon.
Take care and have a good weekend, Gene'.

June 2009:
Thursday 04
The Gene Watson Fan Site contacted Richard Weize at
Bear Family Records in Germany (on
Monday 1 June 2009) with regard to the possibility of the label issuing a
Gene Watson Box Set:

Richard
I wish to enquire as to whether or not
Bear Family Records have any plans (in the near or distant future) to
release a comprehensive box set (or sets) of Gene Watson material.
I sincerely hope that the answer is 'yes'.
My name is Sean Brady & I'm the webmaster of the Gene Watson Fan Site, which
is based in the Republic of Ireland & which has been online since September
2004.
I own the domain name (gene-watson.com) & I pay for the annual hosting plan
fees but I do not profit in any way whatsoever from the existence of the
site; the Gene Watson Fan Site is online simply to honour Gene Watson & the
vast contribution he has made to the country music genre.
I have established a wonderful working relationship with Sarah Brosmer (Gene
Watson’s Day-to-Day Manager at Lytle
Management in Nashville) & Carrie Moore-Reed (Gene Watson’s Booking
Representative at
Third Coast
Talent), who have both been very kind & supportive in relation to my
online activities on behalf of Gene Watson.
So much so that (since September 2007) there is now an official Gene
Watson website at
www.genewatsonmusic.com
I have also been proactive in attempting to persuade record labels to
re-release some of Gene Watson's early albums; to date, two UK-based
labels have taken my ideas onboard & have re-released Gene's material,
namely Hux Records &
Hump Head Country.
Hux Records released 'Love
in the Hot Afternoon/Paper Rosie' in 2002, 'Because
You Believed in Me/Beautiful Country' in 2005 & 'Reflections/Should
I Come Home' in 2009.
Hump Head Country released 'Matters
of the Heart' (a 20-track compilation of material from Gene Watson's
time with MCA Records between 1981 & 1984) in 2008.
Thank you for your time.
Regards,
Sean Brady
The Gene Watson Fan Site received the following reply on Wednesday 3 June 2009 from Richard Weize at
Bear Family Records:

Dear Sean,
Thanks for your email.
I really like Gene Watson, but I don't think that we could sell enough of
him for a box set.
At any rate, if you do have a discography written up, send it to me and I
will view it.
Best & Thanks,
Richard Weize
Sean Brady at the Gene Watson Fan Site welcomed the response from Richard
Weize at Bear Family Records in
Germany; however, he feels that now is the time for all Gene Watson fans to
help with the task of persuading Richard Weize to change his decision.

We simply have to persuade Richard Weize that there is an army of Gene
Watson fans around the globe who INSIST that a box set of Gene Watson
material (including everything that this great man has recorded) is made
available for everyone to enjoy.

The Gene Watson Fan Site received the following reply today
(Wednesday 3 June 2009) from Richard Weize at
Bear Family Records:

Dear Sean,
Thanks for your email.

'Dear Gene Watson fans
Below is an announcement from Sean Brady who runs the
www.gene-watson.com fan website with details on how you can WIN a CD or
autographed photo!

Also, just a brief update from Gene himself to you:
'Hi friends,
I just wanted to take this opportunity to tell you that I've been in the
studio non-stop working on the new album and it's going to be very, very
special. We've found great songs and I hope you'll love it as much as
I do. There might be a surprise guest or two on this one… can't wait
to be able to announce it all to you as we get closer to the album release
date which we expect to be late August.
I appreciate everything you do for me, coming to the concerts, checking out
the websites and generally providing your support for our kind of music.
It takes all of us together to keep it country!
The management says to tell you a
newsletter will be coming later this month and I know it will be full of
pictures because everywhere I go, it seems like someone's snapping a photo
these days. They tell me it's good for the websites, the newsletter,
etc so I hope you get a chance to check out the gallery at
www.genewatsonmusic.com on
occasion.
Last, but not least, a big thanks to Sean Brady at
www.gene-watson.com for the new and improved website. I know we
all appreciate the work Sean does and I'm particularly grateful to him for
making such a fine, informative website.
All the best to you, Gene'
