On Monday 12 January 2009, the Gene Watson Fan Site received the following official statement which was issued by Sarah Brosmer at Lytle Management in Nashville:

'What Becomes a Legend Most?

Brad PaisleyGene Watson

(Nashville, TN) When it comes to music legends, it seems that Brad Paisley has a good ear for adding the best talent to his shows. This week he’s added country music legend, Gene Watson, to 'The Paisley Party' line-up for Thursday, January 15 at the Desoto Civic Center in Southaven, MS. Also on the ticket are Darius Rucker and Dierks Bentley.

Desoto Civic Center, Southaven, MS

Watson, was surprised and delighted to get the call from Paisley’s camp.
According to Watson, 'It’s an honor to be called to open for Brad who’s one of the brightest stars in country music and known as one of country music’s top touring acts. This will be our first performance for the year and is a great way to start off 2009!'

Gene Watson, known as the Fourteen Carat Voice, currently has a special spotlight exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and is working on his follow up album to the 2007 critically acclaimed 'In a Perfect World'. The The Associated Press states, 'Watson can make contemporary songs sound like timeless classics. He’s never sounded better, which is saying something'. CMT heralds Gene Watson as 'the most burnished and sensitive male voice on the planet'.

Special Report
Brad Paisley kicked off the final leg of the 'Paisley Party Tour' to a sell-out crowd on Thursday 15 January 2009 at the Desoto Civic Center in Southaven, MS & the line-up for the night was quite impressive; on the ticket was Darius Rucker & Dierks Bentley.

However, the big coup on the night was the appearance of veteran country artist Gene Watson. Brad Paisley specifically asked that Gene be his special guest on the night.

Everyone was wonderful to Gene - treated him like the legend he is! At the sound-check, Brad hung out & listened to Gene's entire sound-check.

Afterward, Gene & Brad had a good visit. Then, it was Brad's turn to sound-check so Gene stayed to hear Brad. Brad surprised Gene when he & the band kicked into the entire song of 'Fourteen carat mind'! Brad informed Gene that they quite often sound-check with that song, which is a favourite of Brad's. Brad, however, had to admit to Gene that his favourite Gene Watson song was 'Farewell party'.

At concert time, two radio personalities from WKIX Radio in Memphis, TN introduced Gene noting his 6 No.1 country hits.

There then followed a video piece from Brad Paisley which included the following piece:

'The last time we played here in Memphis I got the worst review I think I’ve ever gotten. I remember it saying, among other things, that I was no Gene Watson. I certainly agree with that. That gave me an idea.

In the spirit of giving everyone their money’s worth, I asked Gene if he would join the show. I am so thrilled to have the real deal here tonight. There's nothing like kicking off the final leg of the Paisley Party with the one & only Gene Watson singing his amazing 'Farewell Party'.

Gene Watson sang these songs namely 'Should I come home', 'Love in the hot afternoon', 'Fourteen carat mind', 'Take me (as I am) or let me go' & 'Farewell party'.

After the show, Gene Watson enjoyed meeting Darius Rucker & visiting with Dierks Bentley - check out the January 2009 Gallery).
