Wednesday 18
This wonderful piece appears in the February 2009 issue of the the UK's
highly respected Country Music People
magazine & is courtesy of David Allan who writes (naturally!) 'The David
Allan Column':

'You catch me this month in a happy, nostalgic mood. Over the years, many
well meaning folk have tried to persuade me that I really should give up the
notion that much of the really great country music lies in the past.
They say nothing lasts forever, times and trends change, and that's why the
Nashville sound and Americana is where it's at today. I do my best,
honestly, to go along with that and there's a lot I enjoy about the current
scene. A great deal in fact.
Then, just when I and my friend Jack Daniels are convincing ourselves that
the current Billboard country top twenty is a pretty cool affair, along
comes a whammy in the form of the re-release of four now classic albums of
the 60s and 70s on two must-have CDs.
My grateful thanks to Hux Records for letting me hear again - with all the
benefits of digital re-mastering - Charlie Louvin's 'Less and Less & I Don't
Love You Anymore (1965) and 'Lonesome is Me' (1966), as well as those two
classic Gene Watson sets, 'Reflections' (1978) and 'Should I Come Home'
(1979).
This really is awesomely good country music. Packed full of raw emotion -
just marvel at how Charlie wrings every teardrop out of 'Making plans' and
gasp at the sheer intensity of Gene's 'Farewell party'. Add to that a
sprinkling of humour and uncluttered backings featuring lashings of
plaintive steel guitar and lonesome fiddle and you've got a couple of
masterpieces in your hands! Mention should also be made of the meticulous
sleeve notes by CMP's Jon Philibert which get to the very heart and soul of
the music.
Here are two genuine country stars in top form. To these ears, it doesn't
really get much better than this and the sad thing is, of course, that there
are almost no outlets in the UK featuring this sort of classic country. 'No
demand for it' say the trendy young radio programmers.
Not true! There's a legion of knowledgeable country buffs out there who
appreciate the artists and the music of a less commercialised era. How
reassuring to learn that the 'new' Jim Reeves song, 'I'm a hit again', is
being played on radio stations across the rest of Europe thanks to colleague
Stuart Cameron's enterprising 'Hotdisc' service'.

The Hux Records '2-for-1' CD set featuring 'Reflections' (Capitol Records
SW11805, 1978) & 'Should I Come Home' (Capitol Records ST11947, 1979) was
officially released on Tuesday 27 January 2009.
