December 2009
Friday 18
Gene Watson's performance (at
7.00pm on Thursday 17 December 2009) at a Benefit Event
in the Epcor Centre, Jack
Singer Concert Hall, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada was a resounding success.

Gene received a standing ovation (no surprise there but he was the only act to
receive one). The backing band from Calgary had a horn section so they did
a song Gene doesn't do live in his shows in the United States, namely 'The old
man & his horn'. This track is a favourite of the promoter's so he put the
horn section in the band specifically for that one song!

'The old man & his horn' was recorded by Gene Watson & included on 'Beautiful
Country' (Capitol Records, 1977).

'It’s a weeper about a couple who stay together although the spark is long gone.
Gene & Rhonda harmonise sublimely. The mournful, moaning steel &
honky-tonk piano underline every heartache.
The track is drawn from 'A Taste of the Truth',
which stars one of our greatest country vocalists alongside stellar guests such
as Alison Krauss, Trace Adkins, Aubrey Haynie, Sonny Garrish &
John Wesley Ryles, as well as Rhonda.
The set’s superb songs come from the likes of
Hank
Cochran, Shawn Camp, Jim Rushing,
Rebecca
Lynn Howard, Tim Mensey, Keith Stegall,
Harley
Allen & Curly Putman.
If you love real country music, buy this record'.
