December 2006
Friday 29
Today, Sirius Internet Radio broadcast a special interview with Gene Watson,
which had been recorded in Nashville on Wednesday 20 December 2006.
The interview, hosted by Charlie Monk on 'The Roadhouse - Channel 62' on
Sirius Internet Radio, was aired at 10.00am Eastern Time (USA) / 3.00pm GMT
(UK/Ireland).

'Memories to burn' preceded the
interview, which began with Gene praising the song-writing talents of Dave
Kirby (RIP) & Warren Robb, two gentlemen that he considered great friends of
his.

'Sometimes I get lucky & forget' was then
featured, after which Gene spoke about his great friendship with Red Sovine
(RIP). Red advised Gene to pick the right song to sing (& record) & then
imbue that song with the necessary emotion required to give it a dramatic
performance.
Gene also spoke about his first recording session, which took place in
Pasadena, Texas. Although the recording date wasn't mentioned, Gene did
reveal that Huey Meaux was involved, as was a gentleman called Glen Barber.
'Got no reason for going home' was then played & was followed by the story
of how songwriter, Johnny Russell
(RIP), pitched the song to Gene while they were both guests on Ralph Emery's
show.
Gene then discussed his touring schedule in 2006, particularly his very
successful tour of Northern Ireland. He stated that the promoters were
planning to have him back in 2007 before he'd even boarded the plane back to
the US!
Gene praised his fans in Ireland, stating that they really understood &
enjoyed the traditional style of country music that he promoted.
Gene also discussed his colon cancer operation in 2001 & that as far as he
was aware, he was now cancer-free. He informed his audience that he had
undergone both surgery & chemotherapy.
'Fourteen carat mind' was played, before which Gene explained how he had
found this classic Dallas Frazier/Larry Lee track at the bottom of a box of
reel-to-reel tapes on his tour bus late one night.
'Fourteen carat mind' went on to spend 1 week at No.1 on the Billboard
country music singles chart in January 1982.
Gene also mentioned that he was being looked after, on a management level,
by Lytle Management in Nashville,
under the watchful eye of John Lytle.
Charlie Monk then stated that both Joe Nichols & Gary Allan, who are also
managed through Lytle Management,
were great fans of Gene. Joe Nichols has recorded two songs ('Should I come
home' & 'Farewell party') that were previously cut by Gene.
Speaking of 'Farewell party', this quintessential Gene Watson cut closed the
interview, which lasted 30 minutes.
Prior to 'Farewell party' being aired, Gene promoted the fact that
listeners/fans can access his new MySpace website:
