August 2010
Saturday 07
Gene Watson performed onstage at
The Royal Theatre & Event Centre
on the Old Westport Road in Castlebar, Co. Mayo, Republic of Ireland.

Doors opened at 7.30pm; the host was Eamon McPhilomey who presents 'Mac's
Country Store on
Mid West Radio each Saturday night between 10.00pm & 1.00am.

The special guests were Ray Lynam & Philomena Begley.
Shortly after 8.00pm, Ray Lynam, arguably Ireland's greatest country
music artist, graced the stage of the Royal Theatre & Event Centre at 8.00pm
& proceeded to enthral the audience with some of the recordings for which he
is best known, namely 'The door is always open', 'Gypsy Joe & me', 'He
stopped loving her today', 'Brand new mister me', 'Mona Lisa lost her smile'
& 'If we're not back in love by Monday'.
At 8.30pm, Philomena Begley, 'Ireland's Queen of Country Music', took to the
stage & immediately displayed her playful onstage manner for which she is
highly renowned. Philomena then proceeded to entertain the packed
venue with the hit recordings that she is best known for, including 'Queen
of the silver dollar', 'Que sera, sera (whatever will be, will be)', 'How
great thou art', 'Blanket on the ground' & 'Gold & silver days'.
At
8.55pm, Philomena Begley invited Ray Lynam back onstage & they then
proceeded to perform some their hit duet recordings, including 'My elusive
dreams', 'We go together' & 'You're the one I can't live without'.
There was then a fifteen minute interval from
9.15pm.
At
9.30pm, the greatest living country music singer, Gene Watson,
graced the stage of the Royal Theatre & Event Centre in Castlebar & was
immediately greeted with rapturous applause.
Gene Was suffering slightly with a 'tickly cough', but he didn't let
this stop him from giving one of his finest performances. From the
outset, Gene had the audience in the palm of his hand; they were there to
hear & enjoy a genuine exponent of authentic traditional
country music, and Gene in no way disappointed.
Gene treated the audience to an exquisite set of material from his
exemplary career in country music, including 'Love in the hot afternoon',
'Take me as I am (or let me go)',
'Between this time & the next time',
'Carmen',
'Farewell party',
'Fourteen carat mind',
'Got no reason now for going home',
'I don't need a thing at all',
'Nothing sure looked good on you',
'Paper Rosie',
'Pick the wildwood flower'
&
'Should I come home (or should I go crazy)'.
In between the wonderful music, Gene Watson treated his
audience with tales about his songs, how he discovered them, his life on the
road & in the recording studio, and his deep respect & admiration for his
many fans in both Ireland & the UK.
Gene took time out to praise the Ireland-based Gene
Watson Fan Site where he said that you could find out
more about him than he knew himself; Gene also mentioned his
Official Site, a revamp of
which was now taking place & which should go 'live' later in the year.
Overall, a night of the finest country music from an artist who has remained
true to his country music roots for the best part of forty years. Gene
Watson is revered around the country music loving world, but nowhere more so
than in Ireland.
Gene, please return to our shores soon - you'll be sure of a warm Irish
welcome!
