Thursday 30
Tonight, Gene Watson was one of the special guests who participated
in the Opry Country Classics show at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville which
commenced at 7.00pm CST.

The theme of the evening had been to honour the music of Texas (particularly
the music of Johnny Horton, George Jones &
Willie Nelson), but following the death of
Vern Gosdin on Tuesday 28 April 2009, it was decided that
Billy Yates would honour a man who had been known affectionately within the country music genre as
'The Voice'.
Billy Yates performed Vern Gosdin's 'Chiseled
in stone' which was the CMA (Country Music Association) 'Song of the Year'
in 1989.
Gene Watson was onstage at 7.45pm CST; other artists present on the night
included Jeannie Seely &
Mel Tillis, along with rising stars Emily West
& Justin Moore.

Later, Gene Watson was interviewed backstage at the Grand Ole Opry in
Nashville by Lorraine Crook & Charlie Chase for the 'Crook
& Chase' show; the interview was aired in the US on the
RFD-TV network on Thursday 14 May 2009.

Wednesday 29
Tonight, Gene Watson visited the Douglas Corner Cafe in Nashville & enjoyed a performance from
45RPM.

45RPM are a wonderful band of studio musicians & songwriters (Joanie
Keller Johnson, Mike Johnson, Hank Singer, Steve Hinson, Mark Johnson,
Dirk Johnson, Mark Beckett & Jimmy Melton)
who only perform in Nashville once a month, so it was fortuitous that Gene
was in town tonight (Wednesday 29 April 2009).

45RPM perform older, traditional country cover songs & being studio
musicians, the sound is incredible. Naturally, they were delighted to
have Gene Watson in the house so they called upon him to perform a few songs
which Gene was glad to do.

45RPM requested that Gene perform 'Cowboys don't get lucky all the time'
which was originally included on 'Beautiful
Country' (Capitol Records, 1978).
Gene then sang 'Nothing sure looked
good on you', a track originally included on 'Should
I Come Home' (Capitol Records, 1979); this latter track was
specially requested by Lytle Management's
Sarah Brosmer.

Gene then performed 'Fourteen carat mind' which was originally included on
'Old Loves Never Die' (MCA Records, 1981) and, following the definitive version of
'Farewell party', originally included on 'Reflections'
(Capitol Records, 1978), Gene received a standing ovation.
At the end of the evening, 45RPM surprised Gene & called him up to the stage
to help perform their last song of the night which turned out to be Gene's
own 'Should I come home (or should I go crazy)', the title track from 'Should
I Come Home' (Capitol Records, 1979).

Thursday 02
Today, Gene Watson undertook an in-store appearance at the
Opry Shop in Nashville at 5.30pm CST; you can view a selection of photos
of Gene Watson's appearance at the Opry Shop in Nashville on Thursday 2
April 2009
here.

Gene Watson then graced the stage of the Grand Ole Opry for the 'Opry
Country Classics' Show at 7.00pm CST - other artists who appeared
included
Marty Stuart &
Mandy Barnett.

Special Opry Report (from Sarah
Brosmer who was standing in the wings!)
'It was quite a
sweet thing that happened!

I was standing talking to
Vince Gill
as Gene
walked onstage & I told Vince that Gene's favourite song of his was 'If
you
ever have forever in mind'; this track was included on Vince Gill's
'The Key'
(MCA Records, 1998).
Well, right then, Vince said 'Well then, we
will just do that one!' He turned back to his band members & said 'Change
of plans - we are going to do 'If you ever have forever in mind'!
Then, when Vince went onstage, he talked a bit about the great Gene Watson & introduced
that song; then, when it was ending, somehow he added Gene's name to the
ending of the song!
Gene was tickled by the whole thing which was so very nice of Vince to do.
But that is Vince - without a doubt, one of the
very nicest people you will ever meet - star or not - but decidedly different
for a star to be so selfless'.
