Gene Watson's Peers: Kevin Montgomery
Gene Watson's peers within the country
music industry believe in the sheer talent of this unassuming man from east
Texas, so much so that Gene is regarded by many of them as 'the singer's
singer' - and rightly so!
All of Gene's Peers who were contacted in 2006 were most gracious with their
time & words. It is here, within this special part of gene-watson.com, that
you have an opportunity to read a quote from
Kevin Montgomery, which he
submitted to this site on Tuesday 29 August 2006.
Sean Brady would like to take this opportunity to say 'thank you' to
Kevin Montgomery who has made a
special contribution to a unique part of this online 'celebration of a Lone
Star Hero'.

About Kevin Montgomery...
Kevin Montgomery was born on 21
June 1968 in Nashville & is a
singer-songwriter who is renowned for his high lonesome voice
& heartfelt lyrics.
He was born to parents Bob Montgomery,
who was a song-writing partner & best friend of Buddy Holly, performing
together as the duo 'Buddy & Bob' while teenagers in high school, and
Carol Montgomery, who was a session singer for stars including Elvis Presley
& Bob Dylan.

Kevin Montgomery's recording career began with the release of his debut album
'Fear
Nothing' (A&M Records, 1993). He toured the US with acts including Sheryl
Crow & David Crosby and featured on a duet with Mary Chapin-Carpenter on
the 1996 Buddy Holly tribute album 'Not Fade Away' singing his father's
composition 'Wishing', his father also co-producing the track.

Building his profile as a songwriter, Kevin Montgomery's 'I won't close my
eyes' (co-written with Larry B. Gottlieb)
was recorded by Martina McBride & included on her double platinum selling
(album) 'Evolution' (RCA Records, 1997).

Later, Juice Newton took Kevin's song 'Red blooded American boy'
(changing the gender reference to 'girl') & included it on her album
'American
Girl' (Renaissance Records, 1999).

Kevin Montgomery also sang backing vocals on Lee Ann Womack's
'I know why the
river runs' which was included on her platinum selling album 'I Hope You Dance'
(MCA Records, 2000).

2000 was also the year which saw Kevin release 'Another Long Story' (Road
Trip Records, 2000) on his
own independent label Road Trip Records with production credits including
Frank Liddell & Dusty Wakeman and musicians including Matt Rollings &
Doug Pettibone.
The video for the track 'Let's all go to California' was
featured on BBC television's 'TOTP2' & many worldwide radio stations &
video channels, as was the title track.
In
2001, Kevin saw the release of 'Kevin Montgomery Live', a 'live' acoustic
album featuring Robert Reynolds from the Mavericks & Trish Murphy on
harmonies which was recorded at Nashville's Bluebird Cafe.
Touring in the UK extensively, with both a full band line-up (including
musicians Robert Reynolds, Paul Deakin & Mike McAdam) & also
acoustically with another band member, Grammy Award winner
Al Perkins, led
to the release of the 'Bootleg' album in 2002, which was recorded 'live' at London's
12 Bar Club the previous year.

Building on the success of his touring, which was by now worldwide, 2003 brought the
release of Kevin Montgomery's
third studio album; '2:30am' (Syren Records, 2003) featured both
Lee Ann Womack
& Trisha Yearwood on harmony vocals & included Montgomery's touring band with added
musicians Chad Cromwell, Glenn Worf, Bob Britt, Matt Rollings, Chris
Carmichael & Jerry Dale McFadden.
The opening track 'Tennessee girl' was
featured on BBC television's coverage of the CMA Awards show & the video for the
song was shown on channels such as GAC in the United States & CMC in Australia.
Still touring successfully to larger audiences each year, 2005 saw the
release of 'Live From Glasgow!', an album that captured the essence of the
live full band show sound in Glasgow's famous King Tut's Wah Wah Hut, with
the Road Trippers including Johnny Mackinnon on keyboard.

Kevin Montgomery's 'True' (Road Trip Records, 2007) featuring Paul Griffith on drums, Shawn
Byrne on guitar (writer of the title track) & Danny White on bass was
released in 2007. Recorded in White's 16 Ton recording studios on Music Row in Nashville, the
album shows a new departure with the extensive use of strings, expertly
scored & performed by Chris Carmichael (fans will be familiar with his
work on 'Cherokee city' on the '2:30am' album from 2003).
The album
'True' follows the
typical Montgomery mix of rockers & sensitive, heart-rending ballads,
undoubtedly the most poignant of these is 'Nothing', which was dedicated to the memory
of Kevin's daughter.
