'The Best of Gene Watson' includes tracks from 'Gene Watson' (Wide World Records, 1969 / Stoneway Records, 1973), 'Love in the Hot Afternoon' (Capitol Records, 1975), 'Because You Believed in Me' (Capitol Records, 1976) and 'Paper Rosie' (Capitol Records, 1977).

'The Best of Gene Watson' also includes two tracks, 'Shadows On The Wall' and 'John's Back In Town', both of which were previously released as 45rpm vinyl singles only. The latter track, 'John's Back In Town', was co-written by Bill Mack and Waylon Jennings (Tuesday 15 June 1937 - Wednesday 13 February 2002).
