Gene Watson's Peers: David Frizzell
Gene Watson's peers within the country music
industry believe in the sheer talent of this unassuming man from east Texas,
so much so that Gene is regarded by many of them as 'the singer's singer' -
and rightly so!
All of Gene's Peers who were contacted in 2004 were most
gracious with their time & words. It is here, within this special part of
gene-watson.com, that you have an opportunity to read
a quote from David Frizzell, which he submitted to this site on
Friday 29 October 2004.
Sean Brady would like to take this opportunity to say 'thank you' to
David Frizzell who has
made a special contribution to a unique part of this online 'celebration of
a Lone Star Hero'.

'In the world of country music, Gene Watson stands alongside legends Lefty
Frizzell, Merle Haggard & George Jones'.
Thank you, David Frizzell, for your support of Gene Watson.

About David Frizzell...
David Frizzell was born on 26 September 1941 in El Dorado, Texas & is the
younger brother of country music legend Lefty Frizzell (31 March 1928 - 19
July 1975). David made his debut performances in Lefty's travelling
road-show. By the time he was thirteen, David had performed a selection of
Elvis Presley songs at the Rainbow Gardens in Bakersfield, California.
David Frizzell signed with Columbia Records in 1958 & cut a series of unsuccessful
songs. After spending four years in the Air Force, he resumed his career,
but still failed to make an impression.

David teamed up with Shelley West & producer Tommy 'Snuff' Garrett, striking
gold with 'You're the reason God made Oklahoma' (1 week at No.1 in April
1981), which was featured on the soundtrack to
Clint Eastwood's 1981 movie
'Any Which Way You Can', a soundtrack album that also includes Gene Watson
performing the track 'Any way you want me'.
This initial hit was followed by three more; 'A Texas state of mind' (1981),
'Another honky tonk night on Broadway' (1982) & 'I just came here to
dance'
(1982).
After their joint success, David & Shelley pursued solo careers, David
scoring first with 'I'm gonna hire a wino to decorate our home' (1 week at
No.1 in August 1982), followed by the Top 10 hits 'Lost my baby blues' &
'Where are you spending your nights these days'.
David, however, was unable to sustain a consistent pattern of recording
success, so he concentrated on touring instead.

Corey Frizzell is David's nephew (Corey is a son of Allen Frizzell) & is an
acclaimed portrait artist based in middle Tennessee.
