About '22 Golden Country Greats'...

Album Overview

Gusto Records, Nashville

Gusto Records is a Nashville-based record company which specialises in reissuing & licensing recordings from its vast catalogue of music from acquired record labels & their own studio recordings.

In mid-2009, Gust Records acquired the back catalogue of Step One Records, an independent record label which had operated out of Nashville between 1984 & 1997 & which had been founded by Ray Pennington & Curtis Potter.

'22 Golden Country Greats' contains some very fine material from Gene Watson's time with Step One Records in the mid-to-late 1990s; however, some tracks are also taken from Gene's time with Broadland Records/Mercury Canada in 1992.

The CD cover sleeve states that the track 'Love in the hot afternoon' is included when, in fact, it is not; the liner notes on the back of the CD cover, which state that Gene Watson writes most of his material, have obviously been written by someone who has no knowledge of the career of Gene Watson.

'22 Golden Country Greats' also contains two tracks ('All my tomorrows' & 'Love's tombstone')
that Gene never completed; one track has no backing vocals, while the second track is one Gene said (on Friday 11 September 2009) that they discarded in the studio after he had laid down a 'rough' vocal for the song.

With a voice as great as that of Gene Watson, his 'rough' vocal is as perfect as some artists' final version, but the track is not mixed well at all.

Gene Watson fans will, no doubt, be eager to add the '22 Golden Country Greats' compilation to their collection particularly since it contains two previously unreleased tracks in the form of 'All my tomorrows' & 'Love's tombstone'.
